A Parent's Guide to Text Shorthand

I'm all for the advancement of technology, and I've seen my fair share of its evolution. Like fellow Baby Boomers, I grew up during the time when television went from black and white to color, and mimeograph machines hit the boneyards to make way for the new photostat copiers.

Even today, I love to hear about the introductions of the latest and greatest new electronic gizmo that supposedly will make our life better and faster. Because we can't be fast enough, now, can we?

The age of when multi-tasking is a required skill, combined with the affordability of cell phones for every member of the household has resulted in what I call a TMP (text messaging phenomena). This is when texting replaces conversation, and "text-speak" is a new standalone language.

Clever texters have created a shorthand version of, dare I say, English. This is their way to text (you guessed it) faster!

Up until my daughter became hopelessly addicted to texting, the only shorthand I knew of I learned in my business class during my sophomore year of high school. Gregg Shorthand was a must-learn in the business world so that bosses could dictate their correspondence to secretaries. I believe at that time, dictaphone technology was also still on the horizon.

But, being the cool, hip, and all-knowing mom that I try to be, I got on board with my daughter's love of socializing via texting, albeit with some groundrules (see sidebar at right).

POP QUIZ - See how many you know:

I choose to "join 'em"...and have a little fun with it. Although, if my grandparents were still alive, I would probably be hearing "the world's going to hell in a handbasket!"

A new generation, new technology. TTYL

Great hub - I understand how you feel. I took Gregg shorthand

too and still remember it. It is as foreign to my kids as their texting is to me. I have learned a few common ones - my son used omg in facebook and I got after him for swearing online - he probably wishes I would get off! gtg

Love the hub - dislike texting although I scored UR. Seems that is the new age of communication...lol I'll stick to calling and the kids know "Thou shalt NEVER text thy mother!" It brought a smile to my face and I can also relate to "the world's going to hell in a handbasket!"

No, No, No please no texting in restaurants.......Can't be stopped you say? I have to get used to it O.K. But I tell you these people texting away at the light sin front of me as the signal turns green and then red and then green again!!! Grrr..

I love your 10 commandments. They seem to be a great start to keeping live, vocal conversations goings within the family. That curfew idea is spot on. I wish you well.

Your fan.
